Incentives!
Imma admit that in playing this game, the constantly dying all the time was getting to me, and making me disinterested in playing the game.
Yes, at first it was amusing,
But it is a core feature of the game, and I didn't want to make it any easier to play.
So, I put in a system of incentives.
When yer character dies, you (you being the player, not the character... the character is dead, remember?) get incentive points according to the level that the character got to.
I put into the game the Incentives Office, which allows you to spend yer incentive points on new incentives.
To start with, there are three incentives, and they have different levels to buy, with the next level being double the price of the previous.
The three incentives are: starting food, starting potion, and starting dagger.
As might be expected, it means that a new character has a chance of spawning with these items. I put it at 50/50 for each level. I didn't want to make it too much easier by this being a sure thing.
So the incentives improve the survivability of new characters, and increase their chances at reaching level 1, which increases the number of incentive points that you get when the character dies, which then allows you to buy another incentive, and so on.
Its the grind. The grind involves character death as a necessary component to this metagaming feature.
And I like it.
