My Three Scrolls

Today I added three different scrolls, which makes the total number of scroll types 4.

The first type was the sleep scroll.

It maxes out fatigue for the enemies in the room and causes a grogginess effect temporarily, which makes their defend rolls less.

It doesn't work on the undead.

Because they don't have fatigue.

You see, for each kind of thing I add to the game, I like to add an exception that isn't subject to it.

It makes the game feel more rich and complex.

Sometimes it actually makes the game more rich and complex.

The second scroll type was the escape scroll.

I was originally going to make a vision scroll that let you look into the room and see what is in it.

Then I realized that the vision scroll would be too expensive to be useful most of the time.

The same functionality will likely be available as some sort of castable spell when I get to that stuff, but it makes for a lousy scroll.

So I picked an escape scroll instead.

The escape scroll immediately moves yer character from its current location to an adjacent location, picking from the available routes randomly.

This is a desperation move, kind of like running, but unlike running, it is always successful.

It can push you into a location filled with other enemies, which proceed to beat you mercilessly.

So it is probably only good to use on a dead end and where you've cleared out the adjacent location.

The third type of scroll was the fire scroll.

It does fire damage to enemies.

I hemmed and hawed a bit about differentiating between types of elemental damage, like fire, light, cold, blah.

Then I decided to do it.

I made the fish be completely immune to fire damage.

I made the undead twice as susceptible to fire damage.

And that's what I did for the last day of the jam.

I have found that this jam doesn't not really change my process.

I still ship every day, but now I also write this blurb right after shipping it.

Will I keep doing this?

Doubt it.
